Appearance:
Kanda is Japanese and about 174-175 cm tall, which is around 5’7-8”. He is generally dressed in traditional Japanese garb, usually of a monotonic, solid color. His usual dress consists of a kimono, and a hakama (Japanese pants), usually ranging in colors from white to black. The color combinations are varied. There is also the occasional navy blue. Upon arrival in Econtra, he was wearing a black kimono and a gray hakama, tied with a black obi (belt). He also has a dark navy blue haori (overcoat) that he sometimes wears draped around his shoulders. His shoes are comfortable zori tatami sandals and he wears tari socks. During the winter, he wears an extra, white undergarment beneath the kimono and wears a long, thick, gray scarf.

His long black hair, which reaches past his waist, is usually kept tied in a semi-high ponytail with some strands left free that frame his face. He also constantly wears his hair down and free of all bounds. When training or performing more demanding tasks, he puts his hair up in a high ponytail.

He is pale, but not an unhealthy pale. He holds himself with poise and dignity. He looks people directly in the eye when speaking. His build is also slight of frame, but not weak or fragile looking. Instead, it allows him to move at incredible speeds and gives him a sort of grace in the execution of his movements.

At first glance, he seems quiet and even gentle, but once you get close enough to properly see him, you see that, though he keeps his face characteristically as blank and emotionless as possible, his eyes are a strong, clear, deep blue-black that show some of the potential he has. They hold a challenging, calculating look that could be immediately turned into a terrifying glare in a moment. He is not so much quiet as he is assertive when necessary. Also, though he seems not to be built for combat or hard work, he is strong and able, both physically and mentally.

Personality:
Kanda strongly prefers to be called by his surname, but he does not react too strongly to being called by his given name. He is cool, composed, and intelligent, which is the reason why he wins most of the time at verbal fights. His voice is carefully kept level and neutral, but when he is provoked or overcome by a particularly strong emotion, that control disappears, if only momentarily. He has been known to resort to some swearing when in such a condition, though he usually refrains from doing so, preferring instead to speak politely, saying only what is necessary. But that doesn’t affect his habit of saying “tch” whenever he feels necessary.

Kanda is prideful and considers it an extreme offense if he is insulted or humiliated. This is one of those times in which he loses the careful control he has over his emotions. If his pride is hurt, he often shuts himself in his room to recover or goes off by himself. During these times, he shuns everyone and can get snappy if bothered continuously. He does not like discussing his problems, preferring to deliberate over them himself.

While maintaining a neutral and somewhat indifferent view on things, he does not refuse help to those in need. While he may be reluctant to help, if asked politely or nicely, he will most definitely help to the best of his abilities. There are certain circumstances when he becomes cold and refuses to help someone even if they asked. This is usually when he has a grudge against them due to some argument or past offense. His grudges take a while to disperse.

Being Japanese and knowledgeable in Bushido, the way of the samurai, Kanda has a strong belief in the concept of shame and retribution. While he is not suicidal, he does have the grace to feel shame. When an apology is due, he gives it awkwardly, but sincerely. Then proceeds to force himself and the apology receiver to forget about the whole incident, or else.

In regard to missions, opponents, or challenges, Kanda becomes very serious and he only has one goal in mind – to overcome the obstacles and finish whatever has been asked of him, especially on missions involving exorcisms. From this, it is clearly seen that he is determined to reach all of his goals.

Other people see him as detached from the world because of his character and his distant way of regarding people. But there is also admiration in the mix. He sometimes comes across as cold and impassive to some people.

Abilities/Strengths:
As a shrine priest’s apprentice, Kanda was educated in various religious rituals and general knowledge. This information includes basic exorcisms, cleansing, and healing rites. He is also knowledgeable in plants and incense. He has also studied much of Japanese history, language, and art, though he does not care for this information much. He is also quite deadly with tongue-lashing and verbal exchanges.

Besides these learned abilities, he also has a special ability with the other world. He is able to sense impending danger through the disturbance of ether in the atmosphere around him. During these, he seems to almost go into a trance, as if seeing something on the Other Side. He is also able to see and communicate with deceased souls and other similar spirits. This proved handy when going against Akuma in his original universe.

Kanda is not only able to see and detect Akuma and evil spirits, he is also quite capable of dispelling most of them. The highest level of Akuma he has currently been able to exorcise is a Level 2. He can easily keep up with and dispatch Level 0 and Level 1 Akuma due to his light weight and power.

As a weapon, he uses a long staff infused with a shard of Innocence to attack Akuma. This staff is mad of durable, but flexible wood, made stronger from the Innocence. Because it is only a shard and he was not particularly compatible with it, he uses some of his natural spirit energy to increase the power in his attacks. He uses this staff similarly to how one would use a naginata, or a stick with a blade at the end. There is, in actuality, no blade but raw energy from the Innocence at the tip. He is not an official Exorcist of any order, but chooses to exorcise the Akuma in the name of his shrine priest. He has also found the use of paper seals (sutras) to be useful and uses them sometimes to temporarily render the enemy motionless and seal its power.

Weaknesses:
The fact that he gives help to those who ask for it could be counted as one of his weaknesses. He is aware of this fact and has tried to counteract it, but fails every time. He always ends up giving reluctant aid, giving himself an excuse to do it.

There is also the fact that he has a somewhat close-range weapon in which he has to get in range of the enemies attacks in order to attack himself.

Also, because Kanda uses his own spiritual energy combined with the Innocence shard, it often exhausts him. While he recovers by meditating afterwards, he is vulnerable while in lack of spiritual energy. There is the possibility that he will use too much spiritual energy, resulting in the excretion of his soul from his body, which will most certainly cause death.

His belief in Bushido might also be counted as a weakness because if one can make him feel shamed enough, this could distract him and end up with a negative result.

Notable Possessions:
Because of the possibility of his soul escaping prematurely from his body, Kanda had a restraint put onto himself so that he might prevent himself from releasing too much spiritual energy. He has a bracelet of prayer beads with a dangling jade jewel in the shape of a lotus. This bracelet keeps his soul intact by storing some of his spiritual energy in itself, acting as a sort of emergency storage for when he is in dire need of it. This restraint continues to work as long as he is wearing it.

His staff is his primary weapon and he almost never lets it out of his sight. It is made of wood and stands from the floor up to his forehead. The shard of Innocence is encased at its head. Kanda has also wound a string of folded sutras about the tip, which is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the Innocence. Besides that, the staff is relatively simple and unadorned.

History:
Kanda’s life essentially began in a little village a small distance from Edo. Kanda’s lineage is unknown, but it was said that the village’s shrine priest found the lone boy in front of the shrine in the rain. The shrine priest took the boy in, dried him off and fed him. Later on, when the boy revealed his spiritual potential by accurately detecting Akuma activity in a village nearby, the shrine priest took him as his apprentice.

He was about seven-years-old then. He either did not remember or did not want to remember his past and he only knew his name, Kanda Yuu, and the fact that he was abandoned by his parents. The shrine priest could not find anyone with the surname “Kanda” in the surrounding area. Kanda also didn’t seem to particularly want to be reunited with relatives. So the shrine priest gave up. Kanda only refers to the shrine priest as “Sensei.” It is also evident that Kanda does not particularly agree with his “Sensei” optimistic and cheery attitude and he does not try to hide his dislike.

From then on, Kanda had lived at the shrine, training to replace the shrine priest in subsequent years. He had also worked at exorcising stray Akuma, spirit sealing and dispelling, as well as several, rather reluctantly done, service rites for people who came requesting for them. He did not pride himself in doing religious rituals and would much rather have been out searching for Akuma and exorcising them.

His goal is to someday be able to travel out in the world by himself and find his parents, who had disappeared, in order to finally find out for himself why they abandoned him all those years ago.

Ilyana (AU) everhungrysage - A new roommate. Kanda thinks of her as annoying. If AU!Kanda had ever met Allen Walker, Ilyana would be the female version of Allen's personality. She eats a lot, is timid and shy, cares about everything and everyone, and is soft-spoken. Therefore, Kanda finds her annoying and yet she is one of the few people he actually wants to interact with. Ilyana is also going to be one of the only people ever to experience a "nice" Kanda...

Alexiel (AU) ad_victoriam - Sparring partner and advisor whom Kanda sometimes actually listens to. Sometimes. Alexiel has expressed concern for Kanda's antisocial attitude. And he's actually decided to become more social...

Midna (OU) snarkytwilight - Kanda is intrigued by this strange little character and finds it enjoyable to discuss the drawbacks of humans and their concepts with him. Though Kanda finds Midna's mischievious speech rather annoying at times...

Surreal SaDiablo (OU) green_disguise - Another roommate. Kanda is gratified that she is warning him beforehand about any loudness or annoyances that might come from sharing a room with her. Also, he has discussed various sorts of quiet things to do.
